Thought I’d share some of my favorite things in our kitchen.

I got hooked on the Magic Bullet 4 years ago, thanks to my Colorado friends, Rob and Donna. It makes single serve smoothies, and you can wash the cups in the dishwasher. I usually use frozen fruit (microwaved for 40 sec.), OJ, homeground flax seed, chia seeds, wheat germ, liquid iron, 2 raw eggs, and a little bit of ice cream. It also has a blade and smaller cup for grinding things like ~flax seed and coffee beans. This is the one kitchen gadget I packed in my luggage when I lived/trained in Colorado in '09.

The George Foreman Grill is another kitchen gadget Donna and Rob got us hooked on. We cook steaks, pork chops, hamburgers, and grilled chicken on it. The one we have has removeable, dishwasher safe plates. We use this so much, we have to get a new one every year when it starts losing it's non-stick. I recommend getting the blue scrub that scrubs between the grills. You can buy a smaller "travel size" one too for ~$20.

Rice cooker/vegetable steamer is a must-have. For seasoning, we put in chicken bouillon and some butter.

A hot pot for our instant coffee and Barry's gold blend tea. It switches off when it's done boiling.

During my nutrition courses as an undergrad and grad student, I learned that eating frozen and steamed vegetables is the way to go for the most nutrient-dense/retained veggies.

Real, salted butter in the butter tray. You can leave this out on the counter, btw. We eat it pretty quickly anyways.
Here’s some of my favorite things to eat/drink.

We drink a lot of Gatorade, lemon lime. I like Gatorade Endurance Formula during the summer because of the added salt and minerals.

We pick up a gazillion boxes of Barry's Gold Blend Tea when we go to Ireland. There is no substitute for good, black tea (with lots of sugar and milk).

I usually drink either chocolate soy milk or OJ with iron and a B Vitamin supplement after runs (or in a smoothie). I'm lactose intolerant-- can only handle a little milk in my coffee/tea (am Ok with most cheeses and ice cream, not Ok with yogurt or sour cream).

Homebrewed and unfiltered beer. None of that secondary fermentation. Lots of yeast and chocked full of nutrients.

A hot pot? Is that what it’s called in the states? Hilarious! It’s called an electric kettle in this part of the world. Could never understand why they weren’t more popular over there though, it’s the first thing people get for a new house here!
Yeah, hot pot! Electric kettle is probably a better term. We’ve kinda had a hard time finding a new kettle, so I don’t know if they’re becoming less popular or what!
This is great! I love seeing what’s in other people’s kitchens. I envy your george foreman, and have heard they are really indispensable. Nothing is better than real butter. I don’t drink anymore, but i used to love dark beer. That looks like a good home brew!
George Foreman is a must-have! Makes it much more convenient to cook meats, which of course impacts what we eat (lots of meat)! I think the beer brewing in this pic is a trappist ale!
This is not really related to this blog entry, but I was wondering do you have a really slow heart rate from all that running?
Oh yeah, my resting heart rate is <40 bpm.
So I’ve secretly been thinking about buying a magic bullet, and I think you just convinced me! Isn’t the constant stash of PowerBars convenient (and tasty!)?
Right on Adrienne! I’m endeared to my Magic Bullet! Definitely, always have Powerbars around! I always manage to find one in my car too when I need it.
Hi Camille,
. Love the powerbar idea before races! Also, I wanted to let you know that I am coached by your husband Conor and I think he is the best! So thank you again for your website and valuable knowledge.
I have to say I learned so much from your website. I really appreciate you sharing such good info. It is such a relief to see that an Elite runner eats real food and ice cream
Awesome to hear Sanya! Of course I eat real food!
The body needs what it knows how to break down. Yep, I know you’re coached by Conor! He said you have some really good book about meditation? Let me know what it’s called and I’ll look for it! I like Jerry Lynch’s book “The Way of the Champion”.
Hi Camille,
I read the Way of the Champion, excellent book. This one is along the same lines and it’s called Running With The Mind of Meditation by Rinpoche Sakyong Mipham. I really believe we can’t achieve great performances unless the mind is “quiet and clear”.
Dear Miss Herron,
I’m banned from running for the next few months because of my severely low weight (my pulse dropped to 46) and my body needs to gain back all the energy. I’m scared of losing my stamina and the mileage I’ve built up (18km). I know I have no strength to run and I’m taking longer and longer time to complete my distance.
Is there something I can do to preserve my stamina, my mileage these few months? I used to run three times a week and it pains me so much to stop totally. I so love running…
Thank you for taking time to read this and hopefully, you can reply me soon.
Hi Funk, you’ve contacted me before. It sounds like you need to seek the proper medical attention and guidance. If you need to put on weight, you likely do not need to be expending energy through exercise. Your health is your priority, not your endurance.
Dear Miss Herron,
Yes, they want me to put on weight and develop some strength/ muscle. But I am so worried about losing my stamina and mileage that I’ve built up (roughly 18km).
Is there something I can do to prevent? Because it is like a long term of NOT running AT ALL. I can’t take it.
Your greatest concern shouldn’t be your stamina– it’s getting your weight back up to get everything functioning properly again. Let the doctors be your guide.
I love this! Going to get the George Foreman grill asap. How easy is that! Thank you for passing along all of this great information. Hope to run into you sometime soon.
Oh yeah, the George Foreman is fantastic! It’s what we primarily cook meats on. Really easy to use. There’s nothing like having an easy-to-use gadget cause it improves your diet too…. eating whole, fresh, easy simple stuff!
Awesome blog! Do you have any recommendations for aspiring
writers? I’m planning to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform like
Wordpress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m totally overwhelmed .. Any tips? Many thanks!
